Phlox, his defensive reaction is more like that of the Australian Frilled-neck Lizard that expands a frill around its neck when threatened to appear larger, Phlox even has a 'frill' like structure around the side of his face.
	Enterprise has been in the Expanse, an area the crew knows is full of anomalies, for at least a few months now but no one thinks that the anomalies might be the cause of Hoshi's hallucinations.
