Originally Brannon Braga tried to make the fans think there'd be a continuity lapse with the "sneak preview" of the Ferengi centuries before their appearance in Next Generation by (falsely) telling fans everyone except Trip would be unconscious throughout the entire episode and only the engineer would see the Ferengi. That turned out to be incorrect, with the entire crew awake and watching the Ferengi return the stolen items.
