TREKCORE > ENTERPRISE > CAST AND CREW > Sub-Commander T'Pol
NAME: Sub-Commander T'Pol
RACE:
Vulcan The Vulcans held the upper hand in the NX-01 launch and insisted that Sub-Commander T'Pol, a Vulcan Science Officer, serve on board and oversee Enterprise's voyages. They refused to supply star charts unless this demand was met. T'Pol did not volunteer for this position and moreover did not want this position. Her skill as a science officer remains unquestioned, however working alongside primitive and irrational humans proves to be an ongoing lesson in Vulcan and Human patience. T'Pol is a typical Vulcan, logical and by the book. She believes that one can only achieve something if the proper effort is expended and adheres fully to Vulcan protocol and beliefs. She eats 'plomeek soup' for breakfast every morning and does not believe in eating meat. In fact she sees it as a primitive side of humans. She does not care much for taste or pleasure and mainly eats what is necessary to her diet. She dislikes humans, an opinion which she formed when she spent time on Earth in the 2150's when she lived in a Vulcan compound in Sausalito in the South of San Francisco. She comes to Enterprise from a Vulcan culture where space exploration follows certain guidelines and protocols and has become the voice of reason and experience. Not bound by emotion as the human crew is, she aids the captain in making decisions based on that experience and knowledge. She was at first hesitant to divulge any information the Vulcans held, proving to anger Archer. As time progressed however, T’Pol learned to trust that Archer’s motives were good and she has become more forthcoming - sometimes even volunteering information before she is asked. Archer has grown to depend on her knowledge and experience and the two have come to trust and respect each other...even to the point of anticipating the other’s actions while in command. T’Pol represents a cool unemotional balance to Archer’s testosterone driven enthusiastic tendencies. Moreover, her ways have begun to influence the crew as much as theirs have influenced her. Though she has been to many worlds and met many cultures she continues to learn on her journey by exploring more of her Vulcan attributes and learning human customs as well. She questions things such as adventure, free will, fun, and simple pleasures and has yet to embrace these ideas but periodically is willing to test a few of them. Due to this close interaction with humans, T’Pol found it necessary to also question Vulcan motives toward them. And when the issue was forced she gave up her Vulcan position to remain on board Enterprise. T’Pol understands that the humans will need her expertise even more as they head into the great Expanse. T'Pol was not expecting what she encountered when she was forced to resign her position with the Vulcan High Council to travel into the Expanse with the Enterprise crew. The Expanse brought many changes to her otherwise dispassionate demeanor. T'Pol experiences an extreme array of emotion from death to life and passion to drug addiction, but she has stood strong in the face of her adversary and took control of herself and Enterprise when the need arose. T'Pol will likely continue to learn from her human counterparts, as they will likely learn from her.
A
former model, Jolene Blalock landed the high-profile role of
Subcommander T'Pol in the Star Trek series Enterprise in 2001. (T'Pol is
the Vulcan member of a starship crew headed by Captain Archer, played by
Scott Bakula.) A bikini-clad 2001 appearance on the cover of Maxim
magazine helped boost Blalock's profile. She has also guest-starred on
various TV series including JAG and Veronica's Closet.
A San Diego native,
Jolene Blalock left home at the age of 17 to pursue a career in modeling.
Traveling through Europe and Asia, the fledgling but confident model
unsurprisingly found frequent work on the runways and in print. It was
on a 1998 trip back to the States that Blalock was compelled to flex her
heretofore untested acting skills, and after a few commercial
appearances and some skill-sharpening at Toronto's Second City Improv
and the Dwight Bacquie Rehearsal Workshop, she made her acting debut on
television's Veronica's Closet. Already comfortable in front of the
camera, Blalock's magnetism shined through the lens and she was soon
cast in the made-for-television movies Jason and the Argonauts (2000)
and On the Edge (2001). After nearly passing on the role three times,
Blalock read the script for Enterprise and made the decision to join the
crew on their missions into the stars. Set before the missions of
Captain Kirk and the rest of the crew on the original Star Trek,
Enterprise tells the tales of a newly commissioned spaceship's maiden
voyages into the depths of space. In 2001, the actress appeared in the
television miniseries drama Diamond Hunters. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie
Guide.
